My reading list for comps

For my comprehensive exam, which is in July/August, I'm reading about all-things-design-studio, and writing about it. This is my reading list:

Design studio education

These texts constitute the core of existing scholarly research related to design studio education. They have been selected because the authors are considered experts in the field, because the work is widely cited, and because the contents directly align with my interests in studio pedagogy as it relates to the development of creative confidence and designerly identity.

Parallels to attributes of design studio

These texts are not directly related to design or design education, but explore the attributes of studio in other contexts. Reading these texts will help me see how these individual qualities have been considered and in what way they have been previously theorized.

Creativity

These texts describe the idea of creativity, as it occurs in design—typically focused on coming up with new ideas and giving form to them. Exploring these texts will give me a scholarly perspective on one of the most fundamental parts of design pedagogy, having ideas and making things that represent them.

Interpretive Social Theory

These are texts that encourage thinking about practice, space, institutions, and design as socially constructed phenomena. These are included to contextualize design studio as a social system, rather than just a space where design is taught and learned. By exploring these texts, I hope to gain familiarity with what can become underpinnings of a social theory of design studio, as related to qualities of identity, collaboration, criticism, time, place, fear, or belonging.
